Activewear Revamp: Declutter your Gym Clothes in No Time
Most of my clients have an activewear drawer overflowing with gym clothes they barely wear. Many of us hold onto pieces that don't make us feel good, leading to a cluttered space and uninspired outfits. The truth is, it IS possible to wear your activewear and still look chic and elevated. It's time to detox your activewear drawer and feel stylish and confident from studio to street. Let’s tackle this task in bite-sized steps using the Sandwich Rule and the Rule of Three.
Empty and Assess
Start by emptying your activewear drawer completely. Lay everything out on your bed or floor so you can see exactly what you have. This step is crucial for assessing your collection and deciding what to keep and what to let go.
Endless pairs of black leggings? Be ruthless!
Endless ill fitting sports tops? Pick out which ones are in best condition, fit well and make you feel good.
Anything in poor condition, colour-washed, years old, gone baggy, ill-fitting - it’s time to let go.
Apply the Sandwich Rule
Remember the Sandwich rule is all about ensuring something you wear on the bottom half, picks out a colour in your top half. All too often clients wear fully black for the gym, with perhaps a colourful trainer. Of course there’s nothing wrong with this but if you want to look stylish for all tiers of your lifestyle, apply the same styling techniques to your gym wear as you would to your smarterwear.
Pull out the tops, sports bra’s and sweaters that match back to your trainers.
The Rule of Three
Apply the Rule of Three to what you have left. This rule helps ensure that your activewear drawer is functional and versatile:
Three Tops: Keep three tops that you can mix and match easily.
Three Bottoms: Choose three pairs of bottoms that you love, and that are in different colours.
Three Extra Pieces: Select three additional items, such as a sports bra, a cool sweater and a chic jacket that compliments your outfits.
Accessorise
Accessorise your outfit with a sports sock, and a cool bag - either a crossbody or a branded canvas shopper. If you don’t have anything up to date enough to bring your outfit up to date, add it to your shopping list.
Organise Your Drawer
Now that you have your curated collection, it’s time to organise. Fold or roll your good condition cohesive only tops, bottoms, and extras neatly and place them back in your drawer. Use dividers or small boxes to keep everything in order. This will make it easier to find what you need and maintain an organised space.
Maintain Your Activewear Drawer
To keep your activewear drawer clutter-free, regularly assess your collection. Every few months, go through your drawer and apply the Sandwich Rule and Rule of Three again. If you buy anything new, exercise the 1 in 1 out rule!
Conclusion
Detoxing your activewear drawer can be a quick and satisfying project. By applying the Sandwich Rule and the Rule of Three, you'll create a stylish, versatile collection that makes you feel good, whether you’re at the gym, walking the dog, or having a ‘home’ day. After this section you should be left with 3 cohesive outfits of stylish pieces that you can mix and match cohesively to feel as amazing about yourself in your gym wear as your going out wear!
